Bev Whittles

2024

Bev Whittles is a Sydney-based singer and guitarist. Drawing on her roots, Bev performs songs from the 50’s to the present day with a country flair, playing live with just her acoustic guitar and vocals. I was commissioned to produce a set of concert posters and a website for her.

I began by developing a brand identity through consultations with the client, and research into her audience and musical style. She requested that overall the branding be simple but maintain a sense of personality, and reflect her country and acoustic rock background. I selected a feminine, handwritten script with a textured quality as my primary typeface, and developed a colour palette of blues and cream. This soft, approachable palette reflected the soulful, down-to-earth spirit of her music, while the handwritten font conveyed a sense of warmth and familiarity with her audience, and set a welcoming tone for new listeners.

I implemented this style across the website and posters focusing on classic layouts and adding personality through typefaces, photography and textured finishes. In the website I followed a grid system to make each page feel cohesive and spacious, and utilised a sans-serif font and columns to enhance readability. I optimised the layout for both desktop and mobile view to ensure a seamless user experience on any device.

I designed nine poster variations in both portrait and landscape formats as the client requested multiple options to use for her various live gigs. I created an adaptable toolkit of elements that could be rearranged to meet the requirements of different assets, such as posters, billboards and social media, while maintaining brand coherence. To add visual interest I used a textured overlay and applied a painterly effect to select images. This gave a worn-in quality to the designs which added the personality requested by the client, while reinforcing the sense of familiarity established by the handwritten typeface.
